Abenthy's Insult: Lemon Custard
Inspired by Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind.
“Leave this place clean of your foul presence,” the arcanist muttered to himself as he watched them go. “By the power of my name I command it to be so.”
I finally realized why his words seemed so familiar. He was quoting lines from the exorcism scene in Daeonica. Not many folk knew that play. The old man turned back to his wagon and began to extemporize. “I’ll turn you into butter on a summer day. I’ll turn you into a poet with the soul of a priest. I’ll fill you with lemon custard and push you out a window.” |
This is Kvothe's first encounter with his 'first real teacher', Abenthy. Abenthy is credited with teaching Kvothe more than all his other teachers set end to end. I can only hope that included a masterclass in other scrumptious-sounding insults.
Ingredients (serves two)
- 300ml double cream
- 100g caster sugar
- zest of two unwaxed lemons
- juice squeezed from 1.5 lemons
- Heat the cream and sugar in a pan on a low-medium heat until the sugar has dissolved (around 5 minutes). Stir once every minute or so.
- Increase the heat and allow the mixture to bubble gently for the last 30 seconds.
- Remove the pan from the heat. Add the lemon zest and juice to the mixture. Stir until fully combined.
- Transfer the lemon custard to your serving dishes, dividing equally between two. Leave to cool then refrigerate for a few hours before eating.
